SIDance was created by CID-UNESCO(Con il International
de la Danse) Korea Chapter in 1998 as a proper
channel made for introducing Korean dance
to the international stages and worldwide
trends to the local dance scene as well. Dance
society in Korea has been experiencing severe
lack of international exchanges and it could
be surmounted, to a certain degree, by the
formation of CID-UNESCO Korea Chapter in 1996.
Among various activities of CID-UNESCO Korea
Chapter, SIDance is the highlight of them.
It is wise to explain the brief history of
Korean dance for better understanding of the
role of SIDance. The glimpse of the western
dance including classical ballet was introduced
during the early 20th century
through indirect route and with inconsistent
pace, and the modernization of Korean ethnic
dance and rigid learning of the western
dance were took place languidly after the
independence from Japanese colonial reign
in 1945. Martha Graham¡¯s techniques were
introduced in 1960s, which was followed
by vigorous creations of contemporary dances
in 1970s.

|
| The 1980s was considered as
a renaissance of Korean dance, and choreographers
of the 2nd and 3rd generations
began to substitute the 1st generation
who revealed serious limitation as major creative
forces in 1990s. However, their(the 2nd
and the 3rd generations¡¯) choreographic
abilities were not enough to satisfy the international
standard, and they, rather, served as the
stepping stones for the next generation in
their 20s and 30s. |
