| Fulfilling the given mission as a proper
channel for international exchange, The 8th
Seoul International Dance Festival (SIDance
2005) proudly presents a variety of acclaimed
domestic and international performances consisting
of 38 pieces by 19 local and 13 foreign companies
for more than 3 weeks from Sept. 27 to Oct.
18 this year at the prestigious venues in
Korea; Towol Theatre and Jayu Theatre of Seoul
Arts Center and Hoam Art Hall. Followings
are summary of the programs.
To introduce world-class choreographic
pieces and top-notch dance artists to inspire
the local dance scene, 3 European, 1 USA
and 1 Asian companies will present their
brilliant pieces already internationally
recognized: N¡¯oublie pas ce que tu devines
by Compagnie Astrakan artistically led by
Daniel Larrieu, former artistic director
of Tours National Choreographic Center in
France; Xenathra and AtaXia by Random Dance
choreographed by Wayne McGregor, a winner
of Time Out Awards for outstanding achievements
in 2001 and 2003, and an Olivier Award in
2004 from UK; Man in a Room choreographed
by Carolyn Carlson and Hunt by Tero Saarinen
full of sensitivity of thought, refined
grotesqueness of movement and clarity of
texture from Finland, a country never fully
introduced before in local dance scene;
City of Twist, Broken Man and Lareigne producing
powerfully modern landscapes for the senses
by Stephen Petronio Company from USA; Ship
in a View by Pappa Tarahumara led by Hiroshi
KOIKE from Japan subtly interwoven the modernity
of dance-theatre with the intense and hieratic
symbolism of the ancient Japanese Noh theatre.
To provide unique opportunity to experience
deep-rooted tradition as well as recent
trend of Korean dance, 6 human cultural
treasures in their 80¡¯s for ¡®The Perfect
and Precious Dances by Virtuosos¡¯, and 8
promising artists in their 20 for ¡®The Korean
Contemporary Dances by Young Artists¡¯ will
present serene beauty and provocative talents.
To promote mutual understanding among different
cultures and introduce Korean dance to international
stages, 2 collaborative works between the
2 countries, and a multi-national project
with 5 Asian countries will be presented:
a co-commission of Mexico-Korea by Festival
Int¡¯l Cervantino & Seoul Int¡¯l Dance
Festival; a co-commission of Japan-Korea
by Condors & HONG Dance Company; and
Little Asia Dance Exchange Network sharing
the common interest in strengthening the
network in Asian countries.
To introduce unexplored treasure in world
dance, entire spectrum of Cuban dance ranging
contemporary, folklore and popular dances
will be presented by one of the most original
and distinguished dance companies in Cuba,
Compania de la Danza Narciso Medina.
To provide opportunity experiencing various
cultural roots and interdisciplinary collaboration,
The Acronote Ensemble founded by KIM Sae-jung,
a Korean-born French multi-artist, brings
together elements of dance, painting, circus
and musical performances with a German and
3 European artists.
